The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour: Accordion Mechanics and the Rationalization of Corporate Luxury

advertisement2

Designed by Hedi Slimane in 2013 as a core pillar of his radical restructuring of Yves Saint Laurent into Saint Laurent Paris, the Sac de Jour represents a calculated, hyper-rationalized translation of classic mid-century corporate utility into the contemporary luxury material landscape. Heavily inspired by the structural austerity of traditional men's attaché cases and the minimalist geometries of mid-century industrial office equipment, the Sac de Jour is defined by an absolute rejection of decorative organic curves in favor of rigid, orthic rectangular construction. The primary mechanical innovation of the bag resides in its lateral accordion-pleated gussets, which are held under variable compression by adjustable leather compression straps running through parallel metal slide loops on the upper perimeter. This accordion-style framework allows the bag's depth to expand or contract dynamically based on the volume of documents or electronic devices placed inside, offering a highly rationalized internal taxonomy that features a central, removable zippered compartment lined in premium suede. The construction utilizes high-density, drum-dyed grain-de-poudre calfskin or ultra-smooth box leather, treated with a matte acrylic surface finish that provides exceptional scratch resistance and color uniformity. The small, heat-stamped foil branding at the upper center is highly understated, allowing the bag's stark geometric outline and prominent leather hanging padlock sheath (clochette) to serve as its primary identifier. From a product design perspective, the Sac de Jour is highly praised for its exceptional professional utility and its clinical structural execution. However, critics note that the compression straps must be completely unbuckled to fully open the accordion gussets, creating an ergonomics paradox where accessing the maximum storage volume requires a multi-step, highly deliberate manual sequence that contradicts the fast-paced fluid movements of modern lifestyle ergonomics.
